Caja Negra Performing Arts Center Opens Doors to Great Theater in San Miguel By Ann Marie Jackson

Actualizado: 15 mar

One of the things I’ve missed most during these two long pandemic years is attending live theater and musical performances; I imagine the same is true for you, as there’s nothing like witnessing talented artists making their magic right in front of us. So it was with an extra measure of anticipation that I recently settled into my vintage art deco theater seat in San Miguel’s exciting new venue, the Caja Negra Performing Arts Center. Located within the Casa de la Noche, an infamous former bordello turned boutique bed & breakfast, the Caja Negra Performing Arts Center is the new permanent home of the Caja Negra theater company founded in 2013.

I had the pleasure of attending the opening night of Frankie & Johnny, performed with compelling emotional energy and style by one of San Miguel’s own stars, the talented Erik Zavala, and Sofía Leal de la Rosa, a successful screen actress making her theatrical stage debut here in San Miguel. A wonderful addition to the company, Sofía is known for her roles in films such as Todos Sus Muertos (2021), Princesa, una historia verdadera (2018) and Escándalos (2014).

Led by Artistic Director Alan Jordan and Set Designer Francisco Coronado, the Caja Negra Performing Arts Center is a vital addition to the San Miguel arts scene. Upcoming productions include Oh Jealousy, based on Shakespeare's Othello and directed by Christian Baumgartner, and extended runs of My Brilliant Divorce starring Clara Dunham and House starring Sebastián Vallín. The Caja Negra also plans to host guest theater productions and music, dance, and spoken word performances, as well as offer classes for children and teens in acting and stagecraft.

Strict Covid protocols are in place so we can return to enjoying theatrical performances in safety and comfort. Seating is limited, and patrons must show proof of vaccination and wear masks at all times within the venue, except while enjoying a drink at well-spaced tables in the open-air courtyard during intermission.
